Exact Locations Where Geronimo Cycled Across America

Today, I learnt about how to locate the exact position of a place on the earth. The exact position of a place on earth is located using co-ordinates measured by latitudes and longitudes. I watched few videos that my Amma showed on youtube.

Latitudes are lines that run across the globe in parallel fashion from east to west and they are called as parallels of latitudes. The distance between each parallel line is 69 miles and it is called as one degree. Each degree is further divided into 60 minutes. Each minute is further divided into 60 seconds. The equator is the middle of the earth at zero degree and it runs across from east to west half away from north and south pole. The line at 23.5 degree  North is called as the Tropic of Cancer. The line at 23.5 degree South is called as the Tropic of Capricorn. The region between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn are called as Tropics. These regions are known for their hot temperature and dense forests.

Longitudes are lines that run across the globe from North to South and they are called as Meridians of Longitude. Longitudes are not parallel like Latitudes. The zero degree Longitude is called as the Prime Meridian.

Now, I am going to locate the places one has to pass during the bicycle race called as the 'Race Across America'. I am also going to map it with the exact co-ordinates.

Race Across America is a bicycle race that happens in the United States of America. Cyclists pedal for many days starting from the west coast and finish the race in the east coast of America. I came to know about this race when I first read the book 'The Race Across America', Geronimo Stilton series.

I will take you through the places where Geronimo Stilton cycled across and will also share the exact co-ordinates of the places he crossed. The race started on the west coast near San Diego. Here is the map that represents the exact location of San Diego. I created these maps at Scribble Maps

Then, Geronimo reached Arizona and cycled across Grand Canyon. Here are the co-ordinates for Grand Canyon, Arizona.

After cycling across beautiful mountains, Geronimo reached Monument Valley, Arizona and here are the co-ordinates for that location.

Geronimo got exhausted. He rested and refreshed for a while and reached Durango, Colorado. Here are the co-ordinates (latitude and longitude) for Durango, Colorado.

After crossing the Durango, the beautiful town in the mountains, Geronimo headed towards Kansas. Soon, he was in Dodge City, Kansas.

Later, when Geronimo reached St. Louis, Missouri, he saw a river boat docked on Mississippi. Here is the exact location where St. Louis is situated.

Then, Geronimo reached Indianapolis, Indiana.

After crossing Indianapolis, Geronimo pedaled very hard across Ohio. He was few miles away from Annapolis, Maryland where the finish line was waiting. Annapolis is exactly at 38 deg 58 min N, 76 deg 29 min W. Here is the map.

Geronimo reached the finish line at Annapolis, Maryland.

The cities that Geronimo cycled across America are above the Tropic of Cancer. The farthest city from the Prime Merdian is San Diego. The nearest city from the Prime Meridian is Annapolis. That is the reason why San Diego has a bigger number as the degrees and while Geronimo Stilton moved towards east, the degrees started to reduce because he was moving nearer to the Prime Meridian.

Here is the full route Geronimo cycled across America.

One should always remember that the 'Race Across America' is a real race, but Geronimo only raced inside the book. And, the latitudes and longitudes are imaginary lines, you can't see them drawn on the earth. I will learn more with Geronimo Stilton and I shall share with you.
